an AudioUnit Music Device by Urs Heckmann

overview technical philosophy synthesis problems credits download

basics

Zoyd is a MusicDevice AudioUnit. It can be used as a virtual instrument from within MacOS X compatible audio applications like Logic, RAX and SynthTest which support this format.

Like the common VSTi format, Zoyd comes with presets, a nice user interface and can be handled much the same way.

To install, just drag the file "RumblenceZoyd.component" into this location:

~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/

Now, when you launch your MusicDevice enabled application, it should appear as a new choice to make noise.

See, building a semi-modular synth is quite an ambitious and exhausting project. Nothing so complex can be planned by one man in advance. Hence I decided to release this fully working beast to gather opinions, comments, advice and feature request from a wide variity of musicians and tastes before it is too late to change anything important.

The backdraw of this version is the lack of complete optimization. Some kind of optimization require to set things in stone and would be hard to make reversible. See problems-section for more info on what's not like it should be.

The biggest backdraw certainly is the monophonic mode Zoyd currently sports. However, this stuff is free and the final, polyphonic version will be not.

To sum it up: Please give me input on issues like these:
  • Is a third filter absolutely needed?
  • Is the interface - after some hours of work - intuitive enough?
  • Are the different "circuits" sufficient?
  • What other filters do you need? Which ones are crap?
  • Are there any bugs / weird behaviours (except the ones listed on this site)
  • Do you like it anyway?

You are free to use this software as long as you don't sell it. If you give it away, the accompanying text must be included.
